On 1 April 2023, the eight existing councils in North Yorkshire will be replaced by a single North Yorkshire unitary council. This means that all the services delivered by North Yorkshire County Council and the seven district councils – Craven District Council, Harrogate Borough Council, Richmondshire District Council, Hambleton District Council, Ryedale District Council, Scarborough Borough Council and Selby District Council – will be delivered by the new North Yorkshire Council.
The councillors elected on 5 May 2022 will transfer to this new council, and will run it until the next election in May 2027.
