My father served bravely in bomb disposal in Northern Ireland, facing danger with courage and professionalism to protect lives and help support peace during difficult times. From him, I learned the importance of staying calm under pressure, committing to your duty, and standing up for what’s right even when it’s tough.

My grandfather was a Ukrainian refugee who fled the horrors of World War II. Like so many caught up in the brutal realities of war, he was forced to work under Nazi occupation before eventually escaping and finding refuge in the UK. His story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of standing up for freedom, dignity, and justice. His experience taught me compassion for those trapped by forces beyond their control, and a belief that a just society welcomes those seeking a new start.
