Statement to voters

I’m Dermot Reid, standing for Reform UK in Blythe.

Full statement

I live in Tidbury Green with my partner and young son, so like many of you, I care about the basics being right, safe communities, well-run services, and council tax being spent properly.

I spent nearly 14 years in the Royal Navy Submarine Service, working in a close-knit crew where there’s no room for passengers and nowhere to hide from responsibility. You learn quickly to make decisions, take ownership, and get things done properly. That’s a big part of why I’ve decided to stand.

In my day job, I manage large contracts and budgets across buildings and services. It’s about accountability, planning, and making sure things are delivered properly and not just talked about. That’s exactly the approach I’d bring to how the council runs services and spends your money.

Too often, decisions are made without real accountability and residents are left dealing with the consequences. You can see that in places like Blythe Valley, where many feel underrepresented or Tidbury Green where every blade of grass seems to have a planning proposal pending.

And importantly good leadership isn’t just about making decisions, it’s about being willing to review them and change course when they’re no longer working (cough cough, cycle lanes).

If elected, my focus will be simple:

  • Clear accountability on spending
  • Better oversight so services don’t slip
  • A practical, common-sense approach, including revisiting decisions that aren’t working
  • Fairer representation for all our communities
  • Regularly feeding back to residents so people know what’s being done and why
  • Protecting the character of our area while managing growth properly
  • Supporting local businesses and keeping our communities thriving

I’m not a career politician, just someone who deals with real responsibility every day and wants to bring that same approach to the council.

On May 7th, you have 3 votes. I’d really appreciate your support.
