Statement to voters
I left school at 16.
Full statement
As a mature student, I got an engineering degree at Northumbria University. As North of Tyne Mayor, I created thousands of real living wage jobs and built affordable homes. In my 5 years as Mayor, I claimed £0 expenses.
Councillors should be shop stewards for the community in the council, not cheerleaders for the council in the community. I've been an anti-racist campaigner since the late 1980's. I'm pro-trans and LGBTQ+ rights and a White Ribbon ambassador, the campaign for men to speak out against violence against women and girls.
As Mayor, I invested £2 million into rebuilding a derelict youth centre near St James' Park. Local people now have the NUCASTLE sports centre on Diana Street. Disabled people play football. Asian elders play walking cricket on the all-weather rooftop pitch. Thousands of young people get mental health support. It brings our community together.
